Not a whiff of cordite but history everywhere at the Newington Armory site visited on a sunny Thursday.
Originally completed in 1897 by the Royal Marines as a depot for admiralty ships it was taken over by the New South Wales Navy in 1901 and the RAN in 1910. During WW 11 the depot was utilised by the US army and Navy and the Royal Navy and at the same time expanded significantly with large magazine bunkers, wharf extensions and cranes along with a two foot tramway. The RAN finally vacated the site in 1999 and handed it over to the NSW Government for inclusion in the Sydney 2000 Olympics site. Excellent guides and commentary and our usual enjoyable lunch at the waters edge topped off a great day.
A big thank you to Ted Bell for his suggestion for the visit and excellent notes on the Armory.
John Robinson.
